GEEKLAW Testimonials

Read some of our lovely testimonials:

Loye O (President 2016/17):

“GEEKLAW has been a phenomenal education and development experience for me on a personal level. GEEKLAW operates at the intersection between technology and law demystifying what the rapid developments in technology mean for our legal rights. This requires the development of a state of constant commercial awareness as there is a need to keep abreast of the newest advancements.

My tenure serving as the President of GEEKLAW has taught me much on both a personal and professional level. I have learnt a great deal about the Dark Web, Government Surveillance, Bitcoin and the technology which underpins the Bitcoin system (the Blockchain). Further, I have learnt about my leadership style as well as my strengths and weaknesses in position of leadership. I now understand the skills I bring to team situations and how best I can help the team leverage those skills to attain our goals.

GEEKLAW has also provided an amazing platform through which I have met various influential individuals and thought leaders in cutting-edge fields. It has also provided me a chance to interact with the school administration and form solid links with a wide array of people.

My time with GEEKLAW has left an indelible impact on me. I have grown far more than I thought possible and I look forward to seeing GEEKLAW continue to grow.”

Davinder K (Executive Vice-President 2016/2017):

“GEEKLAW is a student run society that focuses on information technology and the law. In a world where technological developments occur almost everyday, such a link is vital in order to remain up-to-date, both as a legal enthusiast and an everyday student.

Not only has GEEKLAW propelled me to learn more about the law, and in particular information technology, it has allowed me to push myself beyond my comfort zone. When I first came to University of Leicester, I was driven only by academic requirements. After joining GEEKLAW, I was exposed to many extra-curricular activities where I was able to work on my interpersonal and interpersonal skills, such as public speaking and interacting with students on a one-on-one basis.

Not only has GEEKLAW helped me in developing such skills, I have also been able to expand my network, as I have had the opportunity of meeting with various individuals at the top of their field, as well as student body.

All in all, GEEKLAW has created nothing but benefits, which have and will continue to help me in the future and I hope students take advantage of this exciting society, whether it be a simple interest in a conference or the benefits therein.”

Anita Li (Event Coordinator 2016/17):
“It has been a pleasure working with GEEKLAW as an event coordinator. GEEKLAW provides a great opportunity to learn different knowledge and skills outside the academic study. I learned how to plan and organise an event from zero to everything. I also learned the importance of preparation and to review every event for improvements. The team is also very helpful and supportive to guide you to the role. It is an invaluable experience to be part of the GEEKLAW.”

Jaskaran S. Pharmaha (VP, Networking 2016/2017)
“GEEKLAW is not only a student driven organisation which focuses on the daily changes information technology introduces to the legal realm, but it is also considered a support group which seeks to raise awareness about certain issues that require the continuous involvement of legal professionals and their expertise in relevant fields due to arising concerns. Technological advancements demand and require the opinions of professionals who have constantly analysed and evaluated particularly vast changes taking place in law/technology which may warrant future changes in policy or proposals of reforms to be taking place in the law. It was truly an honour meeting and working alongside such experts. Professionals who were more than willing to share their competencies in particular areas of the law concerning information technology with students, staff and members of the public, are considered to be the predominant backbone support of our Society. Contributions made by guest speakers towards GEEKLAW and the University of Leicester were extremely valuable and indispensable. New knowledge shared by certain folks was truly enlightening and eye-opening. Almost all of our events were open to the public, and this is mainly due to our goal of raising awareness to those around you by educating them. We not only reached our ideal intended law-student based audience, but also reached our sought-after public audience and students from other societies who may have demonstrated an interest in GEEKLAW. This was especially important during my time with GEEKLAW, and as a member of the executive committee, it is what I valued the most. Law students aren’t the only ones who have the right to be educated about certain changes in the law as a result of technological advancements, but the public also has this equal right. It was a pleasure being in a leadership role for GEEKLAW and contributing towards its future success. I sincerely hope GEEKLAW one day becomes an international organisation in the near future, as people around the world may be interested in GEEKLAW has demonstrated that information technology and law can require continuous professional development.

“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” – John F. Kennedy”
